Jane Wales - most powerful woman in gloal philanthropy?
Jane Wales holds four influential positions simultaneously - CEO of the World Affairs Council of Northern California, President of the Global Philanthropy Forum, Executive Director of the Aspen Institute's Nonprofit Sector and Philanthropy Program, and leader of the Clinton Global Initiative's Poverty Alleviation track. Does this make her the most powerful woman in global philanthropy?
In an interview with Alliance magazine, Wales said that she felt one of the strengths of philanthropy was that it didn't attract power-seekers, "but rather those who want to empower others, giving them the tools and resources they need to be most effective".
Asked about the current economic situation, Wales said she thought we would not see a sudden and abrupt change in funding patterns, but a gradual one. She said that the Global Philanthropy Forum in Washington next April (2009) will focus on five crises that are facing political leaders around the world: poverty, including new poverty both at home and aroad; climate change; access to healthcare; access to quality education and the need for post-conflict reconciliation and reconstruction so as to avert state failure.
