Asia Pacific NGO Awards

Asia Pacific Award ceremony
The Asia Pacific NGO Awards, organised by the Resource Alliance and Citigroup Asia Pacific, and funded by the Citigroup Foundation, is the only regional competition of its kind that celebrates and rewards the best NGOs/non-profit organisations.

First launched in 2004 and repeated again in 2005, the Awards focused on professional management, innovation in local resource mobilisation, and the effectiveness of the organisation’s programmes in improving the lives of the people they serve.

NGOs from eight countries (Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand) had an opportunity to enter the competition.

The Awards programme was supported in both years by a series of two-day training workshops in all the 8 participating countries which covered a whole range of issues crucial to the working and growth of NGOs in the developing world. In 2005, over 400 representatives from various NGOs attended the seminars.

The eight regional finalists from 2005 were also able to attend the Asia Pacific Masterclass Workshops held in Singapore, 9 - 10 September, where they had the chance to learn new skills in resource mobilisation and network with their peers from the development sector.

The Senior Citizen Home Safety Association from Hong Kong was awarded the title of NGO of the Year at the regional finals of the 2005 Asia Pacific NGO Awards held at the Asian Civilisations Museum in Singapore on 9th September 2005.

The 2nd prize winner was the Sunshine Social Welfare Foundation from Taiwan, while joint 3rd prizes were awarded to the Laura Vicuna Foundation from the Philippines, the Ren Ci Hospital & Medical Center from Singapore, and Save the Children from South Korea.

Other Country Winners participating in the regional finals included Yayasan Mitra Netra from Indonesia, and Yayasan Sultan Idris Shah from Malaysia.

Simon Collings, Chief Executive of the Resource Alliance said: "Resource Alliance is delighted that the 2005 Asia Pacific NGO Awards have attracted such great entries once again. The quality demonstrated by all of the participants has been excellent, and we hope that they will continue to be shining examples for the NGO sector in the region. We certainly look forward to seeing what the 2006 Awards have to offer."

In 2004, The Garden of Hope Foundation from Taiwan was named the 2004 Asia Pacific NGO of the Year; the 2nd prize winner was Corporation Leftovers Love Sharing Community from South Korea; and the joint 3rd prize winners were the Singapore Children's Society, the Hong Kong Society for the Aged, and Philippine Business for Social Progress.

The Resource Alliance and Citigroup Foundation hope that more non-profit organisations in the region will emulate the finalists and set higher standards of professionalism and excellence in their work. They believe that this unique Awards programme will encourage civil society to invest in local resource mobilisation activities, gain public support and mobilise their communities.
