India NGO Award 2006
Celebrating Success...Rewarding Excellence
![]() |
The Resource Alliance in partnership with The Nand & Jeet Khemka Foundation launched the India NGO Award in May 2006 - a new initiative aimed at advancing India's non-profit sector by promoting financial and organisational stability, and strengthening community support of civil society.
The non-profit sector in India suffers from low credibility and a lack of transparency. High standards of accounting and reporting are not widely known by the sector, the donor community or the general public. Examples of successful resource mobilisation initiatives are also rarely seen. As a result, few non-profits venture into the field of local fundraising and donors are slow to support such initiatives.
The India NGO Award seeks to address these issues in a number of ways, including:
- Setting and promoting good standards and practices in resource mobilisation, accountability and transparency
- Celebrating success and rewarding excellence in the non-profit sector, and identifying and strengthening successful resource mobilisation practices
- Creating examples and inspiration for other non-profits and promoting cross-regional learning
- Raising the visibility of local resource mobilisation initiatives and providing increased support for the sector
- Promoting the overall credibility of the non-profit sector for long-term sustainability
The winners were announced at the final Award ceremony held at Amalatas Hall, India Habitat Centre in Delhi on March 1st 2007. The Chief Guest for the evening was Mr Mani Shankar Aiyer, Hon'ble Minister for Panchayati Raj, Youth Affairs and Sports and Development of the North Eastern Region. Also present were Usha Menon and Simon Collings, the Board Chair and CEO of the Resource Alliance and Don Mohanlal, President & CEO of the Nand & Jeet Khemka Foundation.
Gram Vikas and PRADAN were jointly awarded the title of NGO of the Year 2006, with the Spastic Society of India, Mumbai and SEWA (Self Employed Women's Association) selected as runners up.
A casebook profiling the finalists and other success stories was produced following the Awards to highlight the achievements of these organisation. A copy of this casebook can be downloaded below:
