PT Foundation named Malaysian NGO of the Year 2008
The winners of the 2008 Award were announced at a gala event in Kuala Lumpur on Monday 19th May. The overall winner of the was the Pink Triangle Foundation (www.ptfmalaysia.org). PT was established by a group of gay men in 1987 after the first cases of AIDS were diagnosed in Malaysia - in those early years, as elsewhere in the world, no one wanted to talk about the virus. Today PT does extensive outreach work amongst vulnerable groups including drug users and sex workers. Their work is supported by the Malaysian Government.
The runners up were the National Kidney Foundation (www.nkf.org.my) a well known and highly respected NGO, who even have a section of their website dedicated to fundraising.
The joint winners of the third place were a Cheshire home(www.cheshire.org.my) and Befrienders (www.befrienders.org.my) who work with people who are suicidal.
The winners were announced by YB Dato' Dr Ng Yen Yen, Minister for Women, Families and Community Development.
The Malaysia NGO Awards 2008 were supported in partnership by ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Malaysia and Yayasan Nanyang Press, and organised by the Resource Alliance.
About the Awards
Professional fundraising is not widespread in Malaysia, though there are some organisations running effective programmes. Many NGOs don't know how to communicate about their work and levels of transparency and accountabilty are often poor.
The Malaysia NGO Awards seek to address these issues in a number of ways including:
- Setting and promoting good standards and practices in resource mobilisation, accountability and transparency
- Celebrating success and rewarding excellence in the non-profit sector and identifying and strengthening successful resource mobilisation practices
- Creating examples and inspiration for other non-profits and promoting cross–regional learning
- Raising the visibility of local resource mobilisation initiatives and providing increased support for the sector
- Promoting the overall credibility of the non-profit sector for long-term sustainability
Rewarding Excellence
NGOs from all over Malaysia were invited to enter the competition. Ten national finalists were then selected and invited to the final Awards ceremony in Kuala Lumpur, where the overall winners were announced and received their awards.
Each of the winners received a trophy and a cash prize, and profiles of the national finalists and other success stories will be published in a casebook, which will be distributed across the country.
2-Day Seminar in Resource Mobilisation
To promote effective resource mobilisation among local NGOs and advance good governance, accountability and transparency, a two-day seminar for 150 people was held at the Crown Princess Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, on March 1st and 2nd, 2008.
Eligibility
All non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and non-profit organisations are welcome to enter except those that are primarily involved in political activities or promoting religious doctrine.
Organisations will be evaluated on:
- The delivery of quality services to its beneficiaries
- The demonstration of efficient management of resources, transparency and accountability
- The effective mobilisation of resources (financial and non-financial) from the local community
- Exhibiting capability for financial management
Judging
All entries will be initially reviewed by assessors from the non-profit, academic and corporate sector. A total of ten national finalists will be selected and will go through a process of due diligence. These finalists will then be assessed by an independent national judging panel, and the winners will be announced at the final Awards ceremony. The organiser and its partners will not be involved in any stage of the assessment or judging.
All entries will be considered objectively and according to their relative merits. An organisation’s size or history will not necessarily be an advantage.
